Mentoring is for when you need a senior data person for a few hours a month, not a hire. Three situations where it works.
You either can’t or don’t want to hire a senior data scientist
You have a junior data scientist, or a software engineer who got the data job by default, and nobody senior to look over their shoulder. I’ve been that senior person for biotech, fintech, and green-tech companies: reviewing models before they ship, setting coding and visualization standards, and helping decide which problem to work on first. Your person does the work. I make sure it’s the right work, done right.
You are not sure your organization is ready for data science
Most aren’t yet, and that’s fine. Before you hire anyone, we look at what data you have, what decisions it could change, and whether a spreadsheet would do the job. Sometimes the answer is “not now”. I’ve guided teams moving from pure software to data-driven development, and the hard part is rarely the algorithm. (It’s the data. It’s almost always the data.)
You are not sure what to do with your career
